What I Read: March ’14

Warrior Women: An Archaeologist’s Search for History’s Hidden Heroines by Jeannine Davis-Kimball: I picked this up expecting a more in depth analysis of particular women in history but instead, Davis-Kimball cut a broader swath through pre history. She discusses a class women warriors from China to Celtic lands. This reminded me a bit of my archeology class in college where we shifted through piles of dirt from Peru looking for little bits and bobs. It is amazing to me that such small bits of bone or fabric can tell us so much about how the ancients used to live on the steppe.

The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier: This novel follows a young Quaker as she moves to Ohio from England in 1850. She becomes engaged in the Underground Railroad and struggles between what she thinks is right and her community’s values. If you liked Girl with a Pearl Earring, you will adore this book. This book drew me in and I could not shake Honor for days after I finished reading it.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling: Book 5, down.

Movies I Watched: August: Osage County, Inside Llewyn Davis (I get it, now that I’ve seen it. You must watch this), The Rolling Stone: Gimme Shelter, Thor: The Dark World, Tristan & Isolde, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, This is Martin Bonner, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Capote,  The Summit (omg, this movie STRESSED ME OUT), The English Teacher, Into the White, The Usual Suspects
